Founded in March 2022, Music Saves UA is a non-profit fundraising initiative created by Ukrainian Association of Music Events (“UAME”) and is the largest association of representatives of the music industry in Ukraine. Its mission is to provide immediate humanitarian help to those who need it most right now in Ukraine – those who require urgent help, mothers, children, elderly and those who cannot fend for themselves, as well as to support the national musical product as a means of countering hostile propaganda through music.
It constantly monitors the urgent needs and directs its focus to where it can be most useful now. So far it has:
- In March, it opened a humanitarian headquarters on the premises of Atlas nightclub.
- From March to August, it delivered humanitarian aid throughout Ukraine, focusing on the east of the country.
- Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion it has been actively supporting the headquarters for refugees – Bakota Hub in Khmelnytsky region.
- In June, it opened a humanitarian headquarters in Dnipro.
- In August, it began to actively evacuate civilians from Kharkiv and Donetsk regions.
- In early December 22, it brought to Ukraine influential representatives of the music industry from different countries of Europe and Canada to show the current situation and attract future support.- In December it opened two Heating Points in Kherson.
- Also in December 23, a humanitarian headquarters was opened in Mykolaiv.
In March 2024, UAME hosted the second International Music Ambassadors Tour which DIY is honoured to have been invited to attend. A mission to enable to see the devastation first hand and learn about the current situation to attract future support.
There have been wonderful stories about how artists like Ed Sheeran have donated royalties after he shot the video of 2 Step in Ukraine.
Ed Sheeran and Ukrainian pop-rock band Antytila then presented a joint song — a remake of the track 2Step from the latest album of the British artist, in which Taras Topolia sings in Ukrainian.
Dutch Metal band Within Temptation gives all streaming revenues from Russian plays to Ukraine. The band was founded in April 1996 by vocalist Sharon den Adel and guitarist Robert Westerholt, who are passionate supporters of the Ukrainian struggle. Robert was also an ambassador on the Music Saves UA recent tour, where we saw the complete destruction of the local youth centre in Chernihiv, but hope for young musicians, with new equipment and funding from donations, for a new music school…literally rising from the rubble.
We also provided advice and guidance to local artists and music industry aspirants at a specially convened panel/talks event.
DIY took part in a panel alongside other music ambassadors which include senior representatives from festivals such as Provinssi (Finland), Pohoda (Slovakia), Sziget (Hungary), Das Fest (Germany), Positivus (Latvia) and more.
