DIY magazine’s new podcast series – “Before they knew better” – hits 15000 target with first series and launches live!

Before they knew better – the new music podcast series from DIY magazine

In October 2023 DIY launched an innovative new podcast series, extending their reach even further beyond their already 1m+ strong following by launching a new channel through which our followers can discover even more about their favourite artists.

Ever wondered what your favourite musicians were like before they were the cool, successful people they are today?

Us too!

And so, on Before They Knew Better, we dig into the various escapades of pop stars’ pasts – from adolescent embarrassments to teenage high jinx and beyond.

Each week, our guest brings in a photo, a song and an object that represents a particularly formative moment in their youth, and we’ll be drilling down into the whos, whats, wheres and why god whys (!!!) that follow.

Hosted by DIY features editor Lisa Wright and podcaster Giles Bidder, kicked off proceedings in October 2023 , we got the one and only Sigrid who revealed a whole new side of her life and persona in the launch episode.

She was followed by an A-list cast of guests including Bastille’s Dan Smith, Vaccine’s Justin Young, the Mercury-nominated Olivia Dean, superstar comedian-turned-musician James Acaster, Eurovision pop legend Mae Muller and more. And, kicking off proceedings on 10th October, we’ve got the one and only Sigrid who reveals a whole new side of her life and persona in the launch episode.

Despite being only three months old, the take up of listeners has shown their was a gap in the market for a different style of music podcast journalism, with entertainment at its core provided by insights into artists formative years!

The first series consists of 12 episodes/artist stories with a combined Spotify listenership alone adding up to over 10m!

With a heavyweight, multi channel, campaign supported by the artists themselves, in the first 12 weeks, downloads of the podcasts have exceeded expectations, bursting through our target of 15000 for the entire first series!

Make sure you don’t miss out – subscribe on SpotifyApple, or wherever you get your podcasts in advance so you don’t miss it.
